Why Spinach?

  • In 1999 an article in the Journal of the American Optometric Association showed that individuals who ate spinach may actually see a reversal of ARMD.

  • An article in the British Medical Journal showed that women who ate spinach five times a week or more had a 50% reduction in the incidence of cataracts.

  • Some doctors recommend supplements with lutein.  No studies have shown lutein to be beneficial to ARMD.  All the studies suggesting lutein is helpful have been on leafy green vegetables, with the primary leafy green being spinach.

  • The lutein supplements on the market use solvents to extract lutein from marigold flowers.  No studies have been done on marigolds to show a benefit to ARMD.
